2 CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

MY DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY

HOW MY PRODUCT ENGAGES WITH AUDIENCES AND HOW IT WOULD BE DISTRIBUTED AS REAL MEDIA TEXT

In order to reach my target audience, I needed to identify my target audience and how to get to them. I created my own audience profile to help narrow down my target audience that I am targeting. My audience is based off of how other big brands define their own audiences. For example, I carried out research to find out how Bauer Media, who are the biggest media company in the world, defined their audiences, along with Sky and NME

PLANNING; MY COMP LIST

Kezia Williams, of Entertainment One UK, on the FutureLearn Film Distribution by the Film Distributors Association, speaks about how film distributors build a 'comp list' of comparable films that their target audience would enjoy.

She highlights the importance of knowing your target audience. She asks questions like "what drives them to the cinema" and "what interests do they have". She also says distributors will compare data of films that are similar in their genre, selling points and story.

I learnt from this and put together my own comp list, consisting of three films that I would regard to follow similar themes and that my target audience might also enjoy; Friday the 13th, Halloween and Run.
HALLOWEEN (2018) by Matt Sharpe

I have created a visual collage to show how Spiderman; no way home was promoted, as I think it was promoted greatly as it had a lot of posters, tik toks, and Youtube videos promoting it. Since the creators of the film had a very large budget, they were able to spend a lot of money on promoting the film, in order for it to reach everyone.

Since Spider mans instagram account has over 4.3 million followers, this was a very quick and easy way to promote the film.

Large distribution companies can create successful large scale marketing campaigns in a number of ways such as:
Film trailers
Film posters
Film websites
Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tic Tok and YouTube.
Cross promotion/ product tie-ins such as Heineken and James Bond or BMW and Marvel
News articles
Red carpets and award ceremonies
Interviews

My film is a low budget, independent film called Vendetta. I saw how Mark Jenkins' film 'Bait' distributed was handled, being a low budget independent film also. From Bait's film website, I learnt about the film festivals it was screened at, how it can be viewed, what its marketing materials were and it's USP.

SELF DISTRIBUTION

From reading the ICO (Independent Cinema Office) website, I learnt about the different aspects of self-distribution and how I could apply them.

I could pitch to cinemas directly which would mean I would have to produce my own film materials (DCPs), marketing materials (such as posters, trailers, stills, social media assets ect.) and book and pay for advertisement.

To help my film reach audiences, I will most likely gather a PR team to ensure that the paparazzi and the press see my film before it is released. I am doing this to build hype for the film and make it widespread for all audiences. I would make certain to make deals with the BBFC to ensure my film opening reaches cinemas to make it more widespread.

I would gain visibility for my film through advertisement, festival exposure, reviews and word of mouth.

I also will create a social media account for my film in order to get free promotion and bring it as much hype as possible. to try and get likes and views.  I would most likely choose Twitter, as it is the most likely way of going viral compared to any other social media site.
